Warning mild spoilers ahead 🚨
Spy x Family (said Spy Family … think Hunter x Hunter) is an action-comedy series centered around one of the best spies in the world, code name Twilight, and the start of the series finds him on one of his most difficult missions to date, finding a family. He has to go deep undercover, his target is a man in the upper echelons, and to accomplish his mission he needs help, said target already has a child enrolled at the prestigious Eton college, enter Anya and Yor, his newly acquired daughter, and wife respectively. The former he needs to befriend the son of his target and the latter, is a requirement for the family interview at Eton.
Although these connections were formed out of necessity for his mission, Twilight starts to realize what having a real family might be like, but because being a spy requires disconnect and feelings complicate things beyond worth, he’s never truly considered having a family of his own because of the risk as well as the inconvenience of it all, but as time passes it becomes evident that cover or no cover Twilight is showing signs of being a great dad, going out of his way more often than not just to make Anya happy.
Some of the most fun to be had is in realizing that every member of the new Forger family has a big secret that they just can’t let the others know about, Twilight being a spy, his new wife, Yor trying to hide her role as a deadly assassin and little Anya being able to read minds, is completely and utterly enamored with the professions of her new parents, seeming to play out the events of her favorite spy show in their daily lives, she attempts to guide things in the direction the adults need, but with the capacity of a six-year-old, things are bound to go awry. Rest assured that they do.
I’m not gonna lie, I took my time starting Spy x Family because I may have heard rumors that lead me to believe that the child, Anya, was like something out of the 2009 horror movie ‘The Orphan’ and not a child at all, but an adult in disguise. Once you start Spy x Family, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that the plot is nothing like that, Anya is just a child and all that she wants is a home and family to call her own.
Ultimately, Spy x Family is completely different than anything I expected and with a fair 12 episodes, this was a well-done fledgling season for the series. There are so many comedic highlights, episode 10 in particular and grown man Bill had us rolling, as well as some heartwarming moments, they have a nice balance of genres going for them, and I cannot wait for the second season, but in the meantime, you’ll probably catch me reading the manga. So, don’t make the mistake I made, go ahead and start Spy x Family now!
Thanks for reading, and I will catch you next time.
